Harrison and Burke homer as baseball splits at South Mountain

The Pima Community College baseball team (19-14, 12-10 in ACCAC) split on the road at South Mountain Community College on Saturday in Phoenix.

Devin Harrison (Ironwood Ridge HS) finished the day 2 for 6 with four RBIs, three runs scored and two walks.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 8, South Mountain CC Cougars 2 (7 innings)

Harrison helped put the first game away as he hit a grand slam in the 8th inning in Pima's 8-2 win. Up 4-2 in the 8th, the Aztecs loaded the bases with no outs. Jaquese Moore (Marcos de Niza HS) hit a fielder's choice and South Mountain got the runner out at home plate. With the bases still loaded, Harrison stepped up and hit the grand slam to help put the game away.

Down 1-0 in the 4th inning, the Aztecs scored four runs to take the lead. Trey Stine (Ironwood Ridge HS) hit a two-run RBI single and Trevor Johnson followed with an RBI single. Harrison finished the game 2 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored while Stine went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Moore and pinch runner Travis Chavez (Ironwood Ridge HS) each scored two runs.

Justin Hammergren (Sahuaro HS) picked up the win (3-1) as he pitched five innings giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Chris Kucko (Sahuarita HS) came in for relief and pitched the final two innings giving up three hits.

Game 2: South Mountain CC Cougars 8, Pima CC Aztecs 6 (9 innings)

Brandon Burke (Canyon del Oro HS) cut into South Mountain's lead with a home run but the Aztecs fell short in the second game 8-6. Down 7-3 in the 7th inning, Stine hit a leadoff double and Al Cruz (Nogales HS) drew a walk with two outs. Burke hit a three-run homer to cut the deficit to 7-6 but that's as close as the Aztecs got.

The Aztecs got on the board in the 1st inning when Johnson hit an RBI triple to score Harrison and tie the game at 1-1. Johnson hit an RBI single in the 3rd inning to give Pima a 2-1 lead. Moore stepped up and tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single in the 4th inning. Burke finished the game 3 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Johnson was 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Harrison went 0 for 2 but scored a run and had two walks.

Vinnie Tarantola (Sahuaro HS) took the loss (3-2) as he pitched six innings giving up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Daniel Tolano (Cholla HS) pitched the final two innings giving up one run (one earned) on three hits with one strikeout and one walk.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Tuesday when they host Eastern Arizona College in an ACCAC Conference doubleheader at noon and 2:30 p.m.
