Aztecs baseball drop doubleheader at Cochise College

The Pima Community College baseball team (21-16, 14-12 in ACCAC) were swept on the road at Cochise College on Saturday in Douglas.

The Aztecs lost two very different games as they fell in a run-rule game and in extra innings.

Game 1: Cochise College Apaches 14, Pima CC Aztecs 1 (5 innings)

The Aztecs took a lead in the 1st inning but Cochise took control in Pima's 14-1 loss in five innings. Trevor Johnson put the Aztecs up the board with an RBI single that scored Trey Stine (Ironwood Ridge HS). Cochise scored three runs in the 2nd inning, six in the 3rd and five in the 4th. The Aztecs finished the game with six hits. Johnson finished 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Justin Hammergren (Sahuaro HS) took the loss (3-2) as he pitched two and two-third innings giving up nine runs (nine earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: Cochise College Apaches 7, Pima CC Aztecs 6 (10 innings)

The Aztecs rallied to tie the game on three occasions but Cochise closed it out in Pima's 7-6 loss in 10 innings. Down 4-0 in the 4th inning, the Aztecs cut Cochise's lead in half when Al Cruz (Nogales HS) hit an RBI double which was followed by Brandon Burke's (Canyon del Oro HS) RBI single to make it 4-2. Ruben Bracamontes (Sunnyside HS) hit a groundout RBI in the 6th to tie it at 4-4.

Johnson tied the game in the 7th with a sacrifice-fly RBI to make it 5-5. Jaquese Moore (Marcos de Niza HS) hit an RBI single in the 8th to tie it once again at 6-6. Ivan Estrella (Tucson Magnet HS) was 3 for 4 with an RBI while Marcus Catalano (Salpointe Catholic HS) finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Burke went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored while Moore was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Cruz went 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Johnson (1-1) took the loss. Vinnie Tarantola (Sahuaro HS) started the game and pitched five innings giving up four runs (four earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Roy Aguirre (Douglas HS) pitched an inning giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit with one strikeout and three walks. Daniel Tolano (Cholla HS) pitched three and one-third innings giving up one run (one earned) on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Tuesday when they host Central Arizona College in an ACCAC Conference doubleheader. The games will be at noon and 2:30 p.m.
