Aztecs Baseball Drop Two Games Against Paradise Valley

The Pima Community College baseball team (13-6, 4-6 in ACCAC) dropped an ACCAC conference doubleheader on Saturday against Paradise Valley Community College (7-9, 3-6) at the West Campus.

The Aztecs managed three runs in the two games as pitchers Miguel Figueroa (Tucson Magnet HS) and Daniel Tolano (Cholla HS) took the losses on the mound.

Game 1: Paradise Valley CC Pumas 3, Pima CC Aztecs 1 (7 innings)

The Aztecs tied the game in the sixth inning but the Pumas came right back with two runs in the top of the seventh. The game ended when freshman Manny Ramirez hit into a double-play.

Down 1-0, sophomore David Oropeza (Nogales HS) hit a leadoff single and reached second base on a bad throw. Sophomore Ivan Estrella (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a sacrifice-fly to put him at third and freshman Anthony Felix (Canyon del Oro HS) drove him in with a sacrifice-fly RBI.

Oropeza finished the game 1-for-1 with a run scored and a walk. Estrella and sophomores Francisco Rodriguez (Tucson Magnet HS) and Ryan Ramsower (Salpointe Catholic HS) each went 1-for-3.

Figueroa took the loss (1-2) as he pitched six and one-third innings giving up three runs (three earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and four walks on 104 pitches.

Game 2: Paradise Valley CC Pumas 7, Pima CC Aztecs 2 (9 innings)

The Aztecs took an early lead but surrendered a run in the third and two runs in each the fourth and fifth innings.

Down 5-1 in the sixth inning, the Aztecs had a chance to cut the deficit with bases loaded and one out but sophomore Al Cruz (Nogales HS) hit into a double-play to end the threat. Pima left nine runners on base for the game.

Rodriguez hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to plate Estrella in the first inning. In the eighth, Ramsower led it off with a single and later scored on a Ramirez groundout to second base to make it 6-2. The Aztecs had 12 hits for the game.

Estrella went 3-for-5 with a run scored while Ramsower finished 3-for-4 with a run scored. Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Ramirez went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Tolano dropped his first decision of the season (3-1) as he pitched five innings giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Sophomore Xander Carrillo (Tucson Magnet HS) came in for relief and went three innings giving up one run (one earned) on two hits with two strikeouts.

The Aztecs will play at Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Tuesday in an ACCAC doubleheader. The games will be at noon and 2:30 p.m.
