Matt Cornelius fans 11 as Aztecs Baseball splits against Paradise Valley CC

The Pima Community College baseball team (16-7, 7-5 in ACCAC) played an ACCAC doubleheader against Paradise Valley Community College (18-9, 9-5) on Tuesday at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field.
Sophomore Andrew Stucky (Canyon del Oro HS) finished the day 3 for 7 with an RBI and a run scored. Starting pitchers Jaeden Swanberg (Salpointe Catholic HS) and Matt Cornelius combined to throw 12 innings with 16 strikeouts and give up no earned runs.

  • Game 1: Paradise Valley CC Pumas 4, Pima CC Aztecs 3: The Pumas scored four runs and took advantage of two errors to take the lead as the Aztecs' rally fell short.
    Down 4-0, the Aztecs cut the deficit in half in the 4th inning. Sophomore Hunter Faildo hit an RBI double to score Stucky), who hit a leadoff double to reach base. Faildo later scored on an error to make it 4-2.
    Sophomores Luis Garcia (Salpointe Catholic HS) and Gage Mestas hit back-to-back singles to start the 5th. Freshman Brant Kragel hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to plate Garcia but the Aztecs stranded two runners on base in the inning.
    Faildo finished the game 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored while Stucky and Garcia each went 1 for 3 with a run scored.
    Swanberg took the loss (2-2) as he pitched four and one-third innings giving up four runs (none earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

  • Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 4, Paradise Valley CC Pumas 0: The Aztecs scored four runs in the top half of the 1st inning and Cornelius did the rest from the mound.
    Mestas hit a leadoff triple and was driven in by Stucky. Faildo hit a single and Kragel drew a walk to reach base. Freshman Benji Cazares (Tucson Magnet HS) hit an RBI single bringing in pinch runner Elijah Reeves (Marana HS) to make it 2-0. Freshman Antonio Avila added to the inning with a two-run RBI double to score Kragel and Cazares.
    Cazares finished the game 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored while Stucky went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Avila was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Mestas and Kragel each scored a run.
    Cornelius picked up the win (5-1) after he pitched seven and two-third innings of shutout ball, giving up three hits with 11 strikeouts and one walk on 113 pitches.
