Alvarez throws complete-game shutout, Senior has four RBIs as Baseball splits with No. 2 Central Arizona College

The Pima Community College baseball team (35-11, 21-9 in ACCAC) hosted Central Arizona College (38-9, 25-5) on Tuesday in a matchup between two NJCAA Division I Nationally Ranked teams at the West Campus Aztec Field.
The No. 14 ranked Aztecs shut out the No. 2 Vaqueros in the first game but couldn't halt a rally in the second game. Sophomore Diego Alvarez (Sahuarita HS) got the win in the first game while freshman Collin Senior (Horizon HS) closed out his day at the plate going 4 for 8 with four RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Caleb Herd (Cienega HS) was 2 for 6 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

  • (14) Pima CC Aztecs 5, (2) Central Arizona College Vaqueros 0: Alvarez pitched a complete game shutout, giving up six hits with four strikeouts and one walk on 90 pitches.
    The Aztecs halted the pitcher's duel in the 5th inning when sophomore Antonio Avila hit a one-out triple. Herd drove him in with an RBI single to put Pima on the board. Sophomore Jontae Hennesy reached base on a single and Senior followed with a two-run RBI triple, driving in Herd and Hennesy. Sophomore Brant Kragel capped off the surge with an RBI double to score Senior as the Aztecs took a 4-0 lead.
    Herd hit an RBI single in the 6th inning to plate Avila.
    Senior and Herd each finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Avila was 1 for 3 with two runs scored while Kragel went 1 for 3 with an RBI.

  • Game 2: (2) Central Arizona College Vaqueros 7, (14) Pima CC Aztecs 5: The Aztecs took the lead in the 4th inning, but the Vaqueros scored five unanswered runs, which included four in the 8th inning to take the lead for good.
    Down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the 4th inning, the Aztecs loaded the bases with no outs. They got their timely hitting all with two outs. Herd drew a bases loaded walk to score Kragel. Hennesy followed with a two-run RBI single to bring around sophomore Ruben Castro (Tucson Magnet HS) and freshman Chase Cummings to put Pima up 3-2. Senior came through with his own two-run RBI single in the next at-bat as he brought in Herd and Hennesy to make it 5-2.
    The Vaqueros scored one run in the 5th inning and got a grand slam from Marcus Harrison in the 8th inning.
    Senior finished the game going 2 for 5 with two RBIs while Hennesy went 1 for 5 with two RBIs and a run. Castro was 2 for 3 with a run. Cummings finished 1 for 4 with a run and Herd was 0 for 3 with an RBI, a run and a walk.
    Freshman Auggie Richie (Sabino HS) took the loss in relief as he pitched one inning, giving up three runs (three earned) on one hit with two walks.
