Martin Scores Five TDs as Aztec Football Notches First Win at Air Force Prep

Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College football team (1-0) opened the 2016 season on Friday at the Air Force Prep Academy in Colorado Springs, CO.

The Aztecs outscored the Huskies 21-10 in the second half and went on to win 42-24.

Freshman quarterback Justin Martin (Pueblo HS) went 17 for 32 with 360 yards passing and four touchdowns. He also produced one rushing score and had 14 yards on 10 carries.

Freshman Jalen Edwards had two catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns while fellow freshman Jon Cole had four catches for 87 yards and two receiving scores.

"We got off to a horrible start with penalties and it was one of those things where you try to work out the bugs. We hadn't played anybody and knew we were going to be rusty," Pima football coach Jim Monaco said. "We couldn't get anything going in our first 3-4 series on offense but our defense was playing well. We got some big stops and even though we were up 21-14 at halftime, we felt we shot ourselves in the foot but we believed going into the second half."

Coach Monaco felt that Martin's youth and inexperience showed in the beginning but he "took care of business." He is also looking forward to getting into WSFL play and getting his team into a regular weekly rhythm.

"The kids and the coaches are going to feel good that things are going to become more regimented and scheduled. After the three weeks we've had and everything that's happened, it could have been easy to go there (to Colorado Springs) and have 500 excuses but we wanted to come out with a win and we did."
