The Aztecs open the 2017 season on Saturday, Aug. 26 at nationally ranked Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, TX. The game is deemed "The Battle in the Valley."

"Coach (Brad) Smiley called me last year after coming off great season (7-4 in 2015) but we had too much traveling on our schedule so we said let's talk for next year (2017). He called at first of the year and we said we'd love to," Pima head coach Jim Monaco said. "We're honored and they don't invite anyone that's not a quality team. Coach Smiley liked our roster.

"Realistically, we're opening up with the junior college equivalent of Alabama; they're big, good and fast with many Division I talent on that team. We're real excited and the staff is game-planning Trinity Valley right now."

Coach Monaco is also excited at the future possibilities the game can open up for the Pima football program.

"It gives us more national exposure and the possibility at getting more Texas students and helps with bowl selection."

Monaco is pumped at the roster he is presenting for the game and the 2017 season.

"We're really excited about the kids we have coming back: quarterback Justin Martin, most of o-line and the d-line. Recruiting went well and we're hitting the ground running. Spring has been successful and we have good mental focus on this team."

The Pima Community College football program will hold its spring scrimmage on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at the West Campus track.
