Aztecs Men's Basketball Snap Losing Skid, Win Back-And-Forth Battle Against Cochise

The Pima Community College men's basketball team (5-4, 2-3 in ACCAC) snapped a four-game losing streak in dramatic fashion on Wednesday at the West Campus.

The Aztecs (Div. II) finished the game on a 19-6 run in the final 6:20 to beat Cochise College (9-2, 4-2, Div. I) 88-87.

Down 87-86 with 14.1 seconds left, sophomore Yusef Shehata (Amphitheater HS) drove to the basket and fed the ball to freshman Damon Dubots in the paint for the score. Cochise called timeout with 4.0 seconds left. They missed a three-pointer as time expired as Shehata defended the ball.

The Aztecs led 62-51 with six minutes gone by in the second half. They broke a 49-49 tie by going on a 13-2 run. Pima would only score seven points in a seven minute stretch that helped Cochise take an 81-69 advantage with 6:20 to go.

Sophomore Cameron Volk (Tucson Magnet HS) hit some free throws during the final comeback as he finished with a game-high 23 points. He went 8 for 10 from the free throw stripe. He also had seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. Shehata finished with 17 points, four assists, two steals and two blocks while Dubots scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half. Freshman Kwintin Williams contributed with 12 points and fellow freshman Justin Bessard had eight points and nine rebounds.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Saturday when they host Mesa Community College at 4:00 p.m.
