Amaya wins three-set match but Aztecs men's tennis falls short

The Pima Community College men's tennis team (1-3, 0-3 in ACCAC conference) played a close match against Paradise Valley Community College on Thursday at the Tucson Racquet Club but the Aztecs fell short.

Pima lost the match 5-4. Richie Foitik (Santa Rita HS) and Francisco Ton (Nogales HS) won their matches in singles and doubles competition. The duo won a close doubles match against Evan Gazic and Zac Hackerott 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. Fotik trailed 4-5 in the first set and rallied to beat Gazic 7-6 (8-6 in tie breaker), 6-2. Ton maintained a lead throughout his singles match as he beat Eric Mateer 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 spot. Aldo Amaya (San Luis HS) had the fourth win for the Aztecs. After he dropped the first set of his No. 6 singles match, Amaya came back strong and won a three-set tie breaker against Talon Walz 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8).

Juan Bravo (Nogales HS) rallied in his singles match but fell in three-sets. He lost to Jean Perez 6-0, 3-6, 6-4. Mathieu Lancaster (Marana HS) lost to Hackerott 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles spot. Bravo and Lancaster fell against Mateer and Cody Kacerek 8-3 in their No. 2 doubles match.

Josh Henkel (Canyon del Oro HS) fell in his No. 4 singles match against Kacerek 6-1, 6-0. Henkel and doubles partner Aaron Vazquez (Nogales HS) lost at No. 3 doubles 8-3 to Perez and Walz.

The Aztecs will host Skagit Valley College at the Tucson Racquet Club on Monday. The match will start at 1:00 p.m.
