Ton and Henkel advance to individual finals at Region Tournament
The Pima Community College men's tennis team competed in the first day of the Region I Tournament on Tuesday at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.
Francisco Ton (Nogales HS) advanced to the No. 3 singles championship round after he defeated Alejandro Tovar from Glendale Community College 7-5, 6-2. Josh Henkel (Canyon del Oro HS) won his No. 4 singles semifinals match as he beat Jesus Chino from Glendale 6-2, 6-3 to advance to his final round.
In other semifinal matches, Richie Foitik (Santa Rita HS) lost to Evan Gazic from Paradise Valley Community College at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-4. Mathieu Lancaster (Marana HS) dropped his No. 2 singles match to Matt Deferme from Glendale 6-4, 6-3. Juan Bravo (Nogales HS) lost at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0 while Aldo Amaya fell at No. 6 singles to Andy Nguyen from Mesa Community College 6-0, 6-0.
The Aztecs dropped all three of their doubles matches. Foitik and Ton lost a three-set match to Harry Busby and Max Wightman from Mesa 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Lancaster and Bravo fell at No. 2 doubles 7-6 (5), 6-1. Aaron Vazquez (Nogales HS) and Henkel lost to Jean Perez and Talon Walz from Paradise Valley 6-1, 6-1.
The second and final day of competition begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Paseo Racquet Center.
