Trejo Wins in Singles but Aztecs Men's Tennis Fall vs. New Mexico Military Institute
The Pima Community College men's tennis team (3-7) played some close matches on Friday against No. 13 ranked New Mexico Military Institute (3-9). The Aztecs fell 6-3 at the Tucson Racquet Club.
Sophomore Landon Trejo (St. David HS) provided the only win for the Aztecs in singles competition as he defeated Hector Rodriguez 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Trejo and freshman Curtis Jeffery won their No. 3 doubles match by default. Jeffery also won his No. 6 singles match by default.
Sophomore Jesus Lopez (Canyon del Oro HS) dropped the first set in his No. 4 singles match and trailed for much of the second set but he came back to win a tiebreaker. In the end, he fell in the third set against Brian Collier 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 10-7. Freshman Raj Singh Kaila (Yuma Union HS) kept the second set close in his No. 3 singles match but couldn't force a tiebreaker as he lost to Tebatibunga Bira 6-3, 7-5. Lopez and Singh Kaila dropped their No. 2 doubles match against Bira and Collier 8-2.
Freshman Marc Avalos (Sunnyside HS) held a slim lead early in the second set but was forced to play catch-up as he lost his No. 1 singles match to Herman Abban 6-2, 7-5. Freshman Dalton Reisig (Catalina Foothills HS) lost in his No. 2 singles match against Noureldin Adam 6-1, 6-1. Avalos and Reisig were shut out in their No. 1 doubles match against Abban and Adam 8-0.
The Aztecs will close out the regular season on Tuesday when they host an ACCAC conference match against Paradise Valley Community College. The match will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Tucson Racquet Club.
