Aztecs men's tennis earns sweep over Imperial Valley College

The Pima Community College men's tennis team (1-0) opened the 2017 season on Saturday against Imperial Valley College at the West Campus.

The Aztecs earned a sweep over the Arabs 9-0 to give Ian Esquer his first win as Pima's head coach.

Sophomore Marc Avalos (Sunnyside HS) defeated Robier Verhofstadt 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Francisco Ton (Nogales HS) beat Jose Zaragoza at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-3. Sophomore Dalton Reisig (Catalina Foothills HS) won his match over Greg Gerardo 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

Freshman Francisco Sotelo (Cholla HS) earned a clean sweep win at No. 4 singles over Jesus Galeana 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Raj Singh Kaila (Yuma HS) also swept his way to a win at No. 6 singles over Bryan Vega 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Jesus Lopez (Canyon del Oro HS) won his match at No. 5 singles over Benjamin Cruz 4-0 (ret.).

In doubles competition, Avalos and Ton beat Verhofstadt and Zaragoza 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1. Reisig and Sotelo beat Gerardo and Galeana 6-0, 6-1 at No.2 doubles and Lopez and Singh Kaila won at No. 3 doubles over Vega and Cruz 6-2, 6-0.

The Aztecs open ACCAC conference play on Tuesday, Feb. 28 as they host Mesa Community College at the West Campus tennis courts. The match begins at 1:30 p.m.
