Fabing belts grand slam in softball's sweep at Central Arizona

The Pima Community College softball team (43-11, 36-10 in ACCAC) got back on track on Thursday in a make-up doubleheader at Central Arizona College.

The Aztecs lost two games at Eastern Arizona College on Tuesday snapping a 14-game winning streak. They are one game behind Phoenix College for the No. 1 seed in the Region I, Division II tournament with two games remaining.

Game 1: (3) Pima CC Aztecs 7, Central Arizona College Vaqueras 1:

Alexis Alfonso (Canyon del Oro HS) threw a complete-game in Pima's 7-1 win in the first game. She got the win (26-4) after giving up one run (one earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Pima opened its lead with four runs in the 4th inning. Alfonso and Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) each had RBI singles in the inning. The Aztecs scored two runs on errors in the 6th inning to help seal it. Peralta finished 2 for 4 with an RBI while Alfonso went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Sierra Cuestas (Marana HS) was 2 for 4 with a run scored and Christine Olivas (Hamilton HS) finished 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Game 2: (3) Pima CC Aztecs 12, Central Arizona College Vaqueras 1 (5 innings)

Taylor Fabing hit a grand slam as part of a six-run 4th inning as the Aztecs won the second game 12-1 in five innings. Brianna Quiroz (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a two-run RBI single in the inning. Fabing went 1 for 2 with four RBIs and two walks. Quiroz was 2 for 2 with three RBIs. Alexis Ayala (Sunnyside HS) finished 2 for 2 with two RBIs while Jackie Hernandez (Desert Ridge HS) went 3 for 4 with an RBI, a run scored and a triple.

Ayala picked up the win on the mound (4-1) as she pitched four innings giving up one run (one earned) on five hits with two strikeouts. Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) pitched the final inning and got three outs on four pitches.

The Aztecs will close out the regular season on Saturday against Arizona Western College at the West Campus. The games will be at noon and 2:00 p.m. and the sophomores will be recognized after the games.
