Corona and Critchlow take charge as Aztecs softball sweeps Glendale CC

The Pima Community College softball team (6-3, 3-1 in ACCAC) played its first home doubleheader of the season on Saturday at the West Campus field.

The No. 18 ranked Aztecs swept through Glendale Community College (2-2, 2-2). Sophomore Margarita Corona (Tucson HS) finished the day 6 for 7 with eight RBIs and two runs scored. Fellow sophomore Bailey Critchlow picked up two wins on the mound giving up no runs and one hit in five and two-third innings.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 13, Glendale CC Gauchos 1 (5 innings) The Aztecs took control early with three runs in the first inning. They tacked on four runs in the second inning and six in the third to help seal it.

Corona hit a two-run RBI double in the first inning and a three-run homer in the second. She finished 3 for 3 with five RBIs. Sophomore Gabriela Trejo (Desert View HS) went 1 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI while fellow sophomore Mari Ruiz (Cholla HS) was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Critchlow started and picked up the win (3-1) after throwing three innings giving up no runs on one hit with one strikeout.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 5, Glendale CC Gauchos 4: Corona came through in a clutch situation as she hit the game-winning RBI double to plate Critchlow in the seventh inning. Critchlow led off the inning with a single and stole second base to set up Corona's hit.

The Aztecs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after sophomore Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) scored on a throwing error and Corona hit an RBI single to score Critchlow. In the fourth inning with the game tied 2-2, freshman Alyssa Smith (Winslow HS) hit an RBI single with two outs to give Pima the lead back.

The Gauchos scored two runs in the fifth to put Pima behind 4-3 but Corona was at it again as she hit an RBI single to score Brown and tie the game at 4-4.

Corona went 3 for 4 with three RBIs while Critchlow was 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Brown finished 1 for 2 with two runs, two stolen bases and two walks. Smith was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Critchlow picked up the win in relief (4-1) as she threw the final two and two-third innings giving up no hits with one strikeout. Freshman Mandy Lorenson (Ironwood Ridge HS) started the game and pitched four and one-third innings giving up four runs (none earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

The Aztecs will be on the road on Tuesday when they play at Mesa Community College in an ACCAC conference doubleheader. The games are at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
