Aztecs softball decimates Chandler-Gilbert behind Corona's 11 RBIs and Brown's 10 RBIs

The Pima Community College softball team (21-12, 15-9 in ACCAC) used its strongest offensive outing of the season to demolish Chandler-Gilbert Community College (4-18, 4-18) on Thursday in an ACCAC conference doubleheader.

The Aztecs outscored the Coyotes 34-2 for the day. Sophomores Margarita Corona (Tucson HS) and Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) led the charge. Corona went 5 for 7 with 11 RBIs, five runs scored and three home runs. Brown finished 6 for 7 with 10 RBIs, six runs scored, a home run and three triples. Sophomore Bailey Critchlow and freshman Mandy Lorenson (Ironwood Ridge HS) picked up the wins on the mound.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 14, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 1 (5 innings): The Aztecs scored four runs in each the second, fourth and fifth innings to earn the mercy-rule win.

Corona knocked out a two-run home run in the first inning and hit her second homer with a two-run shot in the third inning. Brown hit a two-run RBI triple in the second inning and hit a leadoff home run in the third inning. She hit another two-run RBI triple in the fifth.

Brown finished the game 3 for 4 with five RBIs, three runs scored and two triples. Corona went 3 for 4 with five RBIs, two runs scored and two home runs. Critchlow was also 3 for 4 with three runs scored while freshman Hannah Freer (Sabino HS) finished 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Critchlow picked up her 10th win of the season (10-5) as she pitched all five innings giving up one run (none earned) on seven hits.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 20, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 1 (5 innings): The Aztecs rallied off 10 runs in the first inning and eight runs in the second to take control.

Corona hit a grand-slam while freshman Marissa Moreno (Desert Vista HS) contributed with a two-run RBI single as part of the first inning.

Corona finished the game 2 for 3 with six RBIs and two runs scored. Brown was 3 for 3 with five RBIs, three runs scored, a triple and a double. Sophomore Gabriela Trejo (Desert View HS) went 3 for 5 with two runs scored while Critchlow was 1 for 1 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Moreno finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored and freshman MaryAlys Julian (Gila Ridge HS) went 1 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Lorenson threw her second straight no-hitter as she improved to 5-3 on the season. She threw all five innings giving up one run (none earned) on no hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks. She struck out each Coyotes batter at least once.

The Aztecs will host Arizona Western College on Saturday at the West Campus. First pitched is scheduled for noon.
