Talamante hits game-winning RBI single as Aztecs softball sweeps Arizona Western College

The Pima Community College softball team (23-12, 17-9 in ACCAC) earned its seventh straight win and picked up a big ACCAC Division I doubleheader sweep on Saturday as the Aztecs topped Arizona Western College (22-13, 14-12).

Freshman Alyssa Smith (Winslow HS) finished the day 5 for 7 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Alyse Talamante secured the sweep for the Aztecs with her game-winning hit. Sophomore Bailey Critchlow and Mandy Lorenson (Ironwood Ridge HS) got the wins on the mound and pitched complete games.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 10, Arizona Western College Matadors 7: The Aztecs took an early lead with four runs in the first inning. The Matadors rallied and cut it to 4-3 after the fourth inning but the Aztecs widened their lead with six runs in the bottom half of the fourth.

Sophomores Margarita Corona (Tucson HS) and Gabriela Trejo (Desert View HS) each hit RBI singles in the first inning. In the sixth inning, Smith hit an RBI single and freshman MaryAlys Julian (Gila Ridge HS) hit an RBI double. Sophomore Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) drew a bases loaded walk in the inning.

Corona finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Trejo was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Smith finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored while Julian went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Critchlow picked up the win (11-5) as she gave up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits with one walk.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 5, Arizona Western College Matadors 4 (8 innings): Talamanate hit a walk-off to score freshman Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) as the Aztecs rallied in the eighth inning to complete the sweep.

Down 4-3 in the eighth, Trejo hit a game-tying RBI single to score Critchlow which moved Flores into scoring position. She walked earlier in the inning.

Smith contributed with RBI singles in the second and sixth innings as she finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Flores finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Talamante finished the game 2 for 4.

Lorenson pitched all eight innings as she gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits with 12 strikeouts and three walks. She has 25 strikeouts in her last three appearances.

The Aztecs will play at Glendale Community College on Tuesday in an ACCAC doubleheader. The games will be at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
