Lorenson throws third no-hitter as softball cruises by GateWay CC

The Pima Community College softball team (29-14, 23-11 in ACCAC) got back on track in Phoenix on Saturday as the Aztecs dominated GateWay Community College (9-28, 6-26).

Freshman Mandy Lorenson (Ironwood Ridge HS) threw her third no-hitter of the season in the second game while the offense scored 23 runs on the day. Sophomore Margarita Corona (Tucson HS) went 4 for 7 with six RBIs while fellow sophomore Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) was 5 for 8 with five runs scored and two triples.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 11, GateWay CC Geckos 2: The Geckos tied the game at 2-2 after scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning but the Aztecs responded with six runs in the fifth inning, one in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to take control.

Corona and freshman Edith Prieto (Sunnyside HS) each hit two-run RBI singles in the fifth inning while sophomore Amy Pacheco (Sahuaro HS) drew a bases loaded walk.

Corona also had RBI singles in the first and seventh innings as she finished 3 for 5 with four RBIs and a run scored. Prieto had a sacrifice-fly RBI in the fourth inning and finished 1 for 3 with three RBIs.

Brown was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, an RBI and a triple while freshman MaryAlys Julian (Gila Ridge HS) went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Sophomore Bailey Critchlow picked up the win (14-6) as she pitched a complete-game giving up two runs (none earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 12, GateWay CC Geckos 0 (5 innings): Lorenson pitched all five innings giving up no hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. She threw a no-hitter at South Mountain Community College on Mar. 14 and at Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Mar. 16.

The offense scored three runs in the first inning, two in the fourth and seven runs in the fifth to cap it off.

Corona blasted a two-run homer in the first inning as she finished 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Alyssa Smith (Winslow HS) cleared the bases in the fifth inning with a three-run RBI triple and also had an RBI single in the first inning. She went 2 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Freshman Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) added a two-run RBI single in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth inning to finish 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Critchlow went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored while freshman Chandler Arviso (Cibola HS) was 1 for 4 with an RBI.

The Aztecs continue their road trip on Tuesday as they play at Central Arizona College in an ACCAC doubleheader. The games will be at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
