Lorenson tosses fifth no-hitter, Corona has eight RBIs as softball sweeps Paradise Valley

The Pima Community College softball team (36-19, 30-16 in ACCAC) displayed a balance on both sides of the diamond as it defeated Paradise Valley Community College (18-28, 18-28) on Tuesday in Phoenix.

Freshman Mandy Lorenson (Ironwood Ridge HS) threw her fifth no-hitter of the season. The offense scored 29 runs and scored in every inning on the day. Sophomore Margarita Corona (Tucson HS) went 4 for 7 with eight RBIs and two runs scored.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 11, Paradise Valley CC Pumas 0 (5 innings): Lorenson gave up no runs, no hits and had eight strikeouts and three walks. She picked up the win and improved to 13-6 on the season.

The offense did the rest as sophomore Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) hit a two-run RBI triple to make it 4-0 in the second inning. Sophomore Bailey Critchlow followed with an RBI single to bring in Brown.

Freshman MaryAlys Julian (Gila Ridge HS) hit an RBI single to widen the lead to 6-0 in the third inning.

The Aztecs put up four more runs in the fourth inning as Trejo and sophomore Margarita Corona (Tucson HS) hit RBI doubles while freshman Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) and sophomore Amy Pacheco (Sahuaro HS) drove in runs with RBI singles.

Brown finished the game 1 for 2 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a triple while Corona went 1 for 3 with three RBIs, a run scored and a double. Flores was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Critchlow went 1 for 1 with an RBI, two runs scored and two walks. Trejo finished 1 for 2 with an RBI, two runs scored, two walks and a double. Pacheco was 1 for 2 with an RBI and Julian went 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 18, Paradise Valley CC Pumas 3 (5 innings): The Aztecs didn't let off the gas as they took an early 3-0 lead after the first inning and posted a five-spot in the third and tacked on eight runs in the fourth.

Trejo hit a two-run home run in the first inning. Corona hit two 2-run RBI singles in the third inning and fourth innings. Pacheco cleared the bases in the fourth inning with a three-run RBI double.

Corona also had an RBI double in the second inning and finished the game 3 for 4 with five RBIs and a run scored. Flores was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. She hit RBI singles in the first and third innings. Trejo went 2 for 2 with three RBIs and three runs scored as she also hit an RBI single in the fifth. Pacheco was 1 for 2 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Critchlow hit a two-run RBI single in the fourth and was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Despite going 0 for 4 for the game, Brown scored four runs and drew two walks. Sophomore Mary Tom (Mountain View HS) finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Critchlow picked up the win (16-8) as she pitched three innings giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Luisa Silvain (Cholla HS) threw an inning in relief giving up one run (one earned) on three hits while freshman Hannah Wood pitched one inning giving up one hit.

The Aztecs close out the regular season on Saturday when they host South Mountain Community College at the West Campus at noon and 2:00 p.m. The Aztecs will recognize their 10 sophomores after the second game.
