Caldera and Jones lead offense as Aztecs softball scores 31 runs in sweep over Glendale CC

The Pima Community College softball team (26-10, 17-9 in ACCAC) produced another offensive barrage on Tuesday in an ACCAC doubleheader against Glendale Community College (9-27, 6-21).

Freshmen Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) made her presence felt in the first game while Sarrah Jones put her stamp on the second game. Sophomore Sierra Gentry finished 8 for 9 at the plate.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 16, Glendale CC Gauchos 10: The Aztecs put the Gauchos away in the later innings as they rallied on two occasions.

Down 10-7, the Aztecs scored six runs in the 5th inning to take the lead back for good. Caldera tied the game at 10-10 with a two-run RBI single to score sophomore Vanessa Duarte (Pueblo HS) and freshman Mya Cabral (Pueblo HS). Sophomore Alyssa Smith (Winslow HS) hit her second go-ahead RBI single of the game which scored Gentry to make it 11-10. Freshman Alizea Durazo-Corday (Pueblo HS) followed with a two-run RBI double to cap off the inning.

Caldera finished the game 3 for 4 with five RBIs and a run scored. Corday went 2 for 4 with three RBIs while Gentry was 4 for 5 with two runs scored.

Freshman Alese Casper hit a two-run RBI double in the 3rd inning and finished 3 for 5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Edith Prieto (Sunnyside HS) hit a solo homer to lead off the 6th inning and was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Gentry picked up the win (3-1) as she threw the final two and two-third innings giving up one hit with three walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 15, Glendale CC Gauchos 7 (5 innings): The Aztecs saw another lead slip away but used the late innings to take control and earn the mercy-rule victory.

Tied at 7-7 in the 3rd inning, Casper reclaimed the lead for the Aztecs with an RBI double with one out. Gentry capped off the inning with an RBI double as the Aztecs scored four runs to take an 11-7 lead. The Aztecs tacked on three more insurance runs in the 4th and won it with a run in the 5th inning.

The Aztecs took a 7-0 advantage in the 1st inning. Smith hit a two-run RBI single and Jones hit a grand slam.

Jones finished the game 2 for 3 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Corday went 3 for 3 with two runs scored while Gentry was 4 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Smith went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Casper picked up the win (7-6) as she pitched three innings in relief giving up two hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

The Aztecs will play an ACCAC doubleheader at Central Arizona College on Thursday in Coolidge. The first game begins at 1:00 p.m.
