Martin homers in extra innings as Softball extends to 22-game winning streak after sweep at Yavapai college

The Pima Community College softball team (31-8, 16-2 in ACCAC) secured its second straight 30+ win season on Tuesday as it extended its winning streak to 22 games after beating Yavapai College (10-17, 10-10) in Prescott.
The Aztecs scored another 24 runs and hit seven home runs on the day as they earned a run-rule victory and got timely hitting in the extra frame of the second game to gain the wins. Freshman Jazmyne Waddell (San Manuel HS) went 2 for 5 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Camila Zepeda continued her 15-game hitting streak as she finished the day 3 for 7 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Sophomore Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) closed out her day going 4 for 6 with three RBIs and three runs and freshman Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS) was 4 for 8 with three RBIs and five runs scored. Sophomores Alexis Tsosie-Hood and freshman Nevaeah Bracamonte picked up the wins in the circle.

  • Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 13, Yavapai College Roughriders 3 (5 innings): The Aztecs fell behind in the 1st inning but rallied off 13 unanswered runs to get the run-rule win.
    Down 3-0 in the 2nd inning, the Aztecs cut into the lead when Zylinski-Wrobel hit a two-run homer to score Tsosie-Hood.
    Zepeda tied the game in the 3rd inning with an RBI double, driving in Marx as she scored on a passed ball to give Pima the lead at 4-3. Freshman Natayla Rivera (Sunnyside HS) capped the inning with a two-run RBI double, bringing around sophomore Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) and Zylinski-Wrobel to put it at 6-3.
    The Aztecs drew back-to-back walks to begin the 4th and Waddell came through with a three-run shot over the fence to make it 9-3 scoring Marx and Zepeda.
    Chacon made it a run-rule situation in the 5th as she hit a grand slam on the first pitch she saw, sending it over the right field fence, driving in Marx, Zepeda and Waddell.
    Chacon finished the game 2 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs while Waddell went 1 for 2 with three RBIs and two runs. Zylinski-Wrobel was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Rivera finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Marx and Zepeda each were 2 for 3 with three runs scored.
    Tsosie-Hood settled in after surrendering up three runs in the 1st inning. She allowed just two hits the rest of the way as she picked up the win. She pitched all five innings, giving up three runs (three earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 11, Yavapai College Roughriders 9 (8 innings): The Aztecs took the lead for good in the 8th inning. Freshman Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo HS) was put on second base to begin the inning. Freshman Marina Price (Rincon/University HS) had a sacrifice-bunt to move her to third. With two outs and a full count, freshman Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) drove a shot to right field for a two-run homer to give Pima the lead.
Bracamonte got a lineout that turned into a 6-5 double-play. She struck out the ensuing batter to end the game.
The Aztecs hit four home runs in the game. Waddell and Zylinski-Wrobel each hit their respected second home runs of the game in the 1st inning. Waddell had a two-run shot to score Marx. Zylinski-Wrobel capped off the inning with her solo home run to give the Aztecs a 4-0 lead.
Zepeda led off the 7th inning with her team-leading 15th home run of the season as she made it 9-7 but the Roughriders scored two in the bottom half of the inning to tie it up and force extra innings.
Marx hit an RBI double in the 1st and a two-run RBI triple in the 2nd inning as she finished the game 2 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Martin was also 2 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Zepeda finished 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run while Waddell closed it out going 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Zylinski-Wrobel went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run.
Bracamonte got the win after she pitched the final one and two-third innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout and one walk.

The Aztecs are back on the road on Saturday when they play at Scottsdale Community College in an ACCAC conference doubleheader. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
