Four Pima track athletes capture titles in third day at Region I Championships

The Pima Community College men's and women's track & field teams made some noise in the third day of competition at the Region I Championships on Tuesday.

Sophomores Sam Shoultz (Corona del Sol HS), Treyshon Malone (Yuma Catholic HS), David Fernandez (Ironwood Ridge HS) and freshman Megan Schiffmacher earned their respected top spots and each gave Pima 10 team points.

Shoultz became a two-time Region I champion in the high jump as he finished with a jump of 6-feet, 11.75-inches (2.13 meters).

Malone took first place in the long jump with a mark of 25-1.75 (7.66 meters). He also set a national qualifier in the 200 meter dash prelims with a time of 21.33 seconds which put him third on the all-time Pima list.

Fernandez took home the top spot in the 10,000 meter race with a time of 32 minutes, 33.20 seconds. He improved on his national qualifying time which was 32:56.12. His new time also put him eighth on the all-time Pima list.

Schiffmacher took first place in the women's high jump as she tied her personal record at 5-6. She also placed fifth in the long jump at 16-7.25 (5.06 meters).

In other men's events, the 4x800 relay team of freshmen Victor Bustamanate (Flowing Wells HS), Gabe Atchley, Andy Trinh (Catalina HS) and Collin Dylla (Ironwood Ridge HS) took second place and earned eight team points with a time of 7:57.75.

Freshman Seth Jarus (Wickenburg HS) accumulated 17 points for the Aztecs as he took third place in the long jump at 23-11.50 (7.30 meters), third in the javelin throw at 157-10 (48.10 meters) and fourth in the high jump at 6-2 (1.88 meters).

Freshman Cam Duffy (Peoria HS) produced nine points for the Aztecs. He took fourth place in the long jump at 23-5.25 (7.14 meters) and fifth in the high jump at 5-10 (1.78 meters).

Freshman Francisco Gonzalez III (Walden Grove HS) earned four points with his fifth place finish in the decathlon with a score of 4109. Freshman James Sather (Buena HS) took sixth place in the javelin with a mark of 146-11 (44.79 meters) giving Pima three team points. Freshman Dahrian Harris-Mesh (Rincon HS) was seventh in the hammer throw at 137-0 (41.76 meters) giving the Aztecs two points.

In women's competition, freshman Aolyion Spruell (Kellis HS) gave Pima eight points as she took fourth place in the high jump at 4-8.25 (1.43 meters) and sixth in the long jump with a mark of 16-5.75 (5.02 meters).

Freshman Alyssa Watkins (Camp Verde HS) also scored points in two events. She took sixth in the javelin with a mark of 104-2 (31.75 meters) for three points and seventh in the hammer throw at 145-10 (44.46 meters) for two team points.

Freshman Teresa Sweeney (San Manuel HS) finished eighth in the javelin with a throw of 92-3 (28.11 meters) for one team point.

The Aztecs will be part of the final day of competition in the Region I Championships on Thursday at Mesa Community College. Events begin at 5:00 p.m.
