Aztecs Women's Basketball Edge Out Snow College

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (11-3) had to gut out a win in the second day of the Bruce Fleck Classic on Wednesday at the West Campus.

The No. 10 ranked Aztecs defeated Snow College (11-6) 73-69. Coming out of a timeout with 39.6 seconds left and up 69-66, sophomore Taylor Blue (Peoria HS) drained a three-pointer at the top of the key to give the Aztecs some breathing room. Freshman Sydni Stallworth (Palo Verde HS) had the assist. Snow College hit a three-pointer on their next possession but with 2.1 seconds left.

With the game tied at 63-63 with 3:18 left, the Aztecs went on a 6-0 run (all free throws) to take the lead for good.

The Aztecs led 38-32 early in the third quarter and went on a 10-0 run to make it 48-32. They went on to score just one point in the final 6:39 of the quarter which allowed Snow College to finish with a 14-1 run. Pima led 49-46 heading into the fourth quarter.

Snow took its first lead of the game at 58-57 with 5:39 left in the game but Blue hit a jumper to put Pima back up. The Aztecs trailed one other time at 62-61 with 3:37 left. Freshman Denesia Smith scored on the next trip down the floor with the opportunity to convert on a three-point play.

Stallworth scored 13 of her 16 points in the first half. Her only field goal in the second half was a three-pointer to begin the fourth and break Pima's scoring drought. Sophomore Shalise Fernander (Flowing Wells HS) scored 14 points with seven rebounds. She was 6 for 6 from the free throw line. Freshman Erin Peterson (Catalina Foothills HS) also scored 14 points as she went 5 for 9 from the field. Blue scored all seven of her points in the fourth quarter and also had eight rebounds.

The Aztecs will close out the Bruce Fleck Classic on Thursday against South Mountain Community College in a non-conference game at 5:00 p.m.
