Aztecs Women's Basketball Earn Rare Win at Cochise College

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (20-5, 14-3 in ACCAC) picked up its 20th win of the season in a tough environment on Saturday.

The No. 8 ranked Aztecs defeated Cochise College 61-53, handing the Apaches (19-6, 13-4) their first home loss of the season.

This was the first time in six years the Aztecs have swept the regular season head-to-head meetings with Cochise. Pima won 72-66 in overtime at the West Campus in December.

The Aztecs led 29-22 at halftime and outscored Cochise 32-31 for the second half.

Freshman Sydni Stallworth led the way with 21 points, five rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Gabby Banales (Cienega HS) had nine points while fellow sophomore Shalise Fernander (Flowing Wells HS) contributed with eight points. Sophomore Taylor Blue (Peoria HS) added seven points and 10 rebounds.

"We had great defensive energy and we fed off it all night," Pima coach Todd Holthaus said. "It's a tough place to win and we never trailed after taking a 12-10 lead."

The Aztecs will play at Mesa Community College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Pima won the first meeting 76-69 at the West Campus in December.
