Aztecs Women's Basketball Dominates South Mountain on Sophomore Day

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (22-7, 16-5 in ACCAC) started its game against South Mountain Community College (0-25,, 0-21) with a big run and didn't let up on Saturday at the West Campus.

The Aztecs started the game on a 28-2 run as they defeated the Cougars 93-34 earning a sweep of the regular season head-to-head meetings. Pima won 81-28 last month in Phoenix.

The Aztecs surrendered just two points in the first quarter and led 40-13 at halftime. They outscored South Mountain 53-21 in the second half.

The Aztecs had four players score in double figures. Freshman Sydni Stallworth (Palo Verde HS) led the way with 17 points on 7 for 10 shooting. She also had five steals and two assists. Fellow freshman Denesia Smith (Cienega HS) had 12 points while sophomore Gabby Banales (Cienega HS) finished with 10 points.

The Pima bench scored 48 points and was led by freshman Bailey Johnson (Tucson Magnet HS), who finished with 11 points. She was 3 for 6 from the three-point line. Freshman Erin Peterson (Catalina Foothills HS) had nine points and five rebounds.

The Aztecs honored its six sophomores (Shalise Fernander, Taylor Blue, Hayley Pryor, Banales, Samirah Miller and Kristin Baldwin) during halftime.

The Aztecs close out the regular season on Tuesday when they play at Scottsdale Community College at 5:30 p.m.
