Aztecs women's basketball drain 12 3-pointers in win at Arizona Western College
The Pima Community College women's basketball team (14-4, 8-3 in ACCAC) bounced back from a tough loss at home on Wednesday to earn a road win at Arizona Western College (14-5, 9-2).
The No. 2 ranked Aztecs (Division II) defeated the No. 23 Matadors (Division I) 91-73 on Saturday in Yuma. The Aztecs hit 12 3-pointers for the game.
The Aztecs took a 61-45 lead in the third quarter but the Matadors went on a 12-2 run to cut it to 63-57 with 7:38 left in the game. The Aztecs responded with a 15-0 run in almost four minutes to make it 78-57 and take control for good.
Freshman Alliyah Bryant (Mesquite HS) came off the bench and hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter. Sophomore Sydni Stallworth (Palo Verde HS) was scoreless in the first but scored 12 points of her own in the second quarter. The Aztecs led 38-32 at halftime.
Stallworth finished with a team-high 28 points while fellow sophomore Bree Cates had 22 points. She scored nine points in the final quarter.
Bryant hit her first six 3-pointers and finished with 19 points on 6 for 9. Sophomore Denesia Smith (Cienega HS) had nine points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals while Erin Peterson (Catalina Foothills HS) also contributed with nine points to go along with six rebounds and three steals.
The Aztecs will start the second half of the season on the road. They will play at Tohono O'odham Community College in Sells, AZ on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
