Hala'ufia dominates glass with 15 rebounds as Aztecs women's basketball overpower Phoenix College
The Pima Community College women's basketball team (20-6, 14-5 in ACCAC) took control in the second half on Saturday to beat Phoenix College (10-16, 7-12).
The No. 5 ranked Aztecs beat the Bears 79-59 after outscoring them 45-28 for the second half. The Aztecs have won at least 20 games for the sixth time in coach Todd Holthaus' 10 years at Pima.
After taking a 34-31 lead at halftime, the Aztecs went on a 15-6 run to take a 49-37 advantage and held the Bears without a field goal for the first seven minutes. Up 63-50 in the fourth quarter, the Aztecs went on an 11-0 run in two and half minutes to make it 74-50 with under four minutes left.
Sophomore Sydni Stallworth (Palo Verde HS) finished with a game-high 23 points on 7 for 18 shooting and 8 for 10 from the free throw line. She also had seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Sophomore Denesia Smith (Cienega HS) and Bree Cates each contributed with 16 points. Sophomore Moana Hala-ufia (Marana HS) did her work under the glass as she finished with 15 rebounds (seven offensive) to go along with four points.
The Aztecs swept the regular season head-to-head meetings with the Bears. Pima won 94-71 last month at the West Campus.
The Aztecs have two regular season home games remaining as they host Central Arizona College on Wednesday at the West Campus. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
