Luisayde Chavez scores 19 points as Aztecs women's basketball beats Utah State-Eastern

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (3-1) played its 2021-22 home opener on Thursday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

  • The No. 12 ranked Aztecs defeated Utah State University-Eastern 75-67.
  • The Aztecs took a 40-29 lead at halftime but the Eagles went on a 14-4 run to begin the third quarter to cut it to 44-43. With the game tied at 48-48, the Aztecs responded with a 13-2 run to end the third as the Aztecs retook the double digit advantage at 61-50.
  • The Eagles started the fourth quarter on an 11-4 run to cut Pima's lead to four at 65-61 but the Aztecs scored four straight points.
  • Sophomore Luisayde Chavez (Rio Rico HS) scored a team-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds, five steals and three assists.
  • Sophomores Melissa Simmons and Jaslyn Booker (Buena HS) each finished with 18 points. Booker also had six offensive rebounds off the bench.
  • The Aztecs return to the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Saturday for the Indigenous People Celebration game against Arizona Christian University JV. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
