Aztecs Women's Basketball uses 30-3 first quarter to cruise to fifth straight win

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (17-6, 12-4 in ACCAC) picked up an ACCAC conference road victory on Wednesday at South Mountain Community College (0-20, 0-15).

  • The No. 14 ranked Aztecs led from the start as they beat the Cougars 90-41 for their fifth straight win.
  • The Aztecs outscored the Cougars 30-3 in the first quarter and led 51-9 at halftime. They went 13 for 20 from the field in the first quarter and shot 55 percent in the first half. Pima held South Mountain with a field goal for almost eight and a half minutes in a stretch between quarters. The Cougars had another scoring drought in the second quarter where they went almost another eight minutes without a field goal.
  • Pima's biggest lead was 57 points on two occasions in the third quarter.
  • Sophomore Jordan Joe scored a team-high 15 points as she went 5 for 9 from the field and was a flawless 3 for 3 from three-point range. She also added seven rebounds.
  • Sophomore Dominique Acosta was 6 for 7 from the field with 13 points while fellow sophomore Taina Lee also posted 13 points after she went 6 for 9 from the field. She also had three assists.
  • Freshman Rylei Waugh had her 21-game streak of scoring in double figures snapped as she scored eight points, but she tied a season-high with 10 assists to go along with eight rebounds.
  • Freshman Gabby Lopez (Bisbee HS) closed out the game with six points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Freshman Mattanaya Vital (Amphitheater HS) scored nine points off the bench while freshman Amelie Buffill-Gutierrez (Sabino HS) added eight points, three rebounds and three assists.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Saturday when they host Yavapai College. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
