Hong recovers from tough first round to tie for first place at South Mountain Invitational

The Pima Community College women's golf team completed a busy week on Wednesday as it closed out play in the South Mountain Invitational in Laveen, AZ.

The Aztecs took second place for the fourth time in five tournaments as they finished with a team score of 714 (365-349). Mesa Community College took first place with 643 (328-315). Chandler-Gilbert Community College placed third with 722 (364-358), Paradise Valley Community College was fourth (797) and South Mountain Community College finished in fifth place (874).

Sophomore Desiree Hong (Sahuaro HS) fought back to tie for first place with a two-day score of 155. She struggled in her first round on Tuesday as she shot a 12-over par 84 and was tied for seventh place. She fell behind by six-strokes for first place coming into the final round. She responded in a big way as she finished Wednesday's round with a one-under par 71.

Sophomore Samantha Hacker (Sahuaro HS) finished ninth in the individual standings with a two-day total of 169 (85-84). Freshman Abby Miller (Ironwood Ridge HS) took 11th with 181 (87-94) and freshman Juliana Perez (Tucson HS) was 17th at 209.

The Aztecs will host the Pima Invitational on April 3-4 at the Randolph Golf Course. The teams will tee-off at 12:00 p.m.
