Aguirre Has Two Goals, One Assist to Propel Aztecs Women's Soccer to Region Finals

The Pima Community College women's soccer team (18-1-2) didn't let a rain delay slow its momentum on Thursday as the Aztecs advanced to the Region I, Division I finals.

The No. 1 seeded Aztecs defeated No. 4 Chandler-Gilbert Community College 5-0 earning their fifth straight shutout win. They have outscored their opponents 19-0 in that stretch. The beginning of the game was delayed 30 minutes and again for a little over an hour after 11 minutes were played.

The Aztecs struck early when freshman Alexis Aguirre (Nogales HS) hit a shot from the left side of the goal in the 2nd minute to put Pima up 1-0. Fellow freshman Destiny Jones followed eight minutes later with her goal that went to the upper right corner of the net. Aguirre scored her second goal in the 24th minute off a misplayed ball that put Pima up 3-0 at halftime.

Sophomore Devyn Hunley (Sabino HS) and Callen Shelton helped seal it with goals in the 59th and 65th minutes respectively. Aguirre had the assist in Shelton's goal on a cross-pass deep in the box.

The Aztecs out-shot Chandler-Gilbert 14-5 for the game. The Pima defense didn't allow a shot on goal in the second half. Freshman goalkeeper Daniela Sanchez (Sabino HS) secured five saves.

Pima suffered their only loss at Chandler-Gilbert on Sept. 7 and played to a scoreless tie against them at Kino on Oct. 8.

For the second straight year, the Aztecs women's and men's soccer teams will host the Region I, Division I finals at Kino North Stadium. The Aztecs women's team will play No 2 Paradise Valley Community College on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

The No. 3 seeded Aztecs men's soccer team will host No. 4 seed Phoenix College Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

Pima goals: Aguirre (Urcadez) 2nd minute; Jones 11th minute; Aguirre 24th minute; Hunley 59th minute; Shelton (Aguirre) 65th minute.
