Hernandez Scores Two Goals as Women's Soccer Holds Off Arizona Western College

Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College women's soccer team (7-3, 7-3 in ACCAC) overcame a tough road test on Thursday as they upset Arizona Western College (7-3, 7-3) in Yuma.

The Aztecs were able to hold off a second half rally to defeat the No. 20 ranked Matadors 2-1.

Freshman Alexis Hernandez (Ironwood Ridge HS) scored two goals in the first half. She put the Aztecs on the board in the 13th minute after a cross pass assist from fellow freshman Dalena Garcia (Rincon HS). Hernandez made it 2-0 with her second goal in the 33rd minute.

The Matadors cut into Pima's lead as they scored in the 65th minute but the Aztecs defense held them off in the end.

"It was a big win for us on the road," Pima coach Kendra Veliz said. "It was a good way to end the first half of the season."

Sophomore goalkeeper Daniela Sanchez (Sabino HS) finished the game with four saves. The Aztecs outshot the Matadors 7-5 for the game.

The Aztecs have built some momentum heading into the second half of the season winning their last three games. They will host No. 2 Paradise Valley Community College on Saturday at Kino North Stadium at 7:00 p.m. The Aztecs fell to the Pumas 1-0 in Phoenix last month in their first game of the season.
