Aztec Women's Soccer Suffer First Defeat at Kino Sports Complex

The Pima Community College women's soccer team (7-4, 7-4 in ACCAC) suffered its first loss since moving to the Kino North Stadium and North Grandstand on Saturday.

The Aztecs took the lead at halftime but fell to No. 2 ranked Paradise Valley Community College (11-0, 11-0) 3-2.

It was the first home loss for the Aztecs since Sept. 21, 2013 vs. Scottsdale Community College when they still played at the West Campus. The Aztecs had won their last seven home games and are now 26-1-2 at the Kino fields.

The Pumas scored the go-ahead goal on a Pima miscue at the net in the 72nd minute. Sophomore Maury Urcadez (Tucson Magnet HS) had a shot from 25 yards out that hit the upper post in the 83rd minute and fellow sophomore Destiny Jones (Canyon del Oro HS) had a great shot that forced the Paradise Valley goalkeeper to jump and knock the ball over the goal post in the final minute.

Down 1-0 in the first half, the Aztecs tied the game when sophomore Alexis Aguirre (Nogales HS) scored on a rebounded shot in the 26th minute. Freshman Alexis Hernandez (Ironwood Ridge HS) put the Aztecs ahead in the 34th minute with her goal that was assisted by Aguirre. The Aztecs led 2-1 at halftime.

The Pumas put pressure on the Pima defense for much of the game. They finished with 17 shots on goal and Pima finished with five. Sophomore Daniela Sanchez (Sabino HS) made some crunch-time saves as she finished with 15 for the game.

The Aztecs were swept by the Pumas in their regular season head-to-head meetings. Pima lost 1-0 in Phoenix last month.

The Aztecs will regroup as they play at South Mountain Community College on Tuesday in Phoenix. The game starts at 3:30 p.m.
