The Pima Community College women's soccer team (15-4-1) closed out the regular season on Thursday with a huge road win.

The Aztecs defeated No. 19 ranked Arizona Western College 1-0 to nab the No. 2 seed in next week's NJCAA Region I, Division I Tournament. The Aztecs closed it out winning seven straight and nine of their last 10 games.

Sophomore Johmonique Smith (Cienega HS) scored the only goal of the game in the 32nd minute with an assist from fellow sophomore Emily Gallagher (Sahuaro HS). The Matadors put more pressure on the Pima defense in the second half but the Aztecs weathered the storm to come away with their eighth shutout victory (fourth straight).

The Aztecs split the regular season meetings with the Matadors as they lost 3-1 last month at Kino North Stadium.

"They knew the significance of this last game because of the effect it would have on the seeding for playoffs. They did a great job of executing our game plan," Pima women's soccer head coach Kendra Veliz said. ""Finishing with a win and a shutout on the road and claiming the No. 2 seed was a fantastic way to end the regular season."

The Aztecs finished the regular season with an 8-1-1 record on the road and a 7-3 mark at Kino North Stadium/North Grandstand.

The Aztecs receive a bye and will host the Region I, Division I semifinal round on Thursday at Kino North Stadium at 6:00 p.m. Their opponent will be determined after the quarterfinal round on Tuesday. Check pimaaztecs.com for schedule updates.
