Alameda wins 3-set singles match as women's tennis beat Mesa College

The Pima Community College women's tennis team (3-6) played its first of two matches in California on Tuesday.

The Aztecs defeated San Diego Mesa College 6-3 as the Aztecs gained advantage after doubles play.

Pima swept the doubles competition as Stephanie Nickles (Canyon del Oro HS) and Jahnessa Mackey (Amphitheater HS) won a tough No. 3 doubles match 8-6 over Elise Villanueva and Gisselle Lopez. Ema Hernandez (Sunnyside HS) and Yani Alameda (Pueblo HS) defeated Lauren Smith and Katie Fowler 8-2 in the No. 2 doubles match. Noelle Karp (Catalina Foothills HS) and Cristina Oropeza (Nogales HS) shut out Hailey Messick and Tian Tian McCray 8-0 in the No. 1 doubles match.

Alameda dropped the second set but came back to beat Smith in the third-set tie breaker 6-2, 3-6, 10-4 in her No. 3 singles match. Karp defeated Messick at No.1 singles 6-1, 6-0 while Mackey shut out Iris-Shea Villafane at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-0.

Nickles won the first set in her match at No. 5 singles but fell to Villanueva 1-6, 6-3, 7-6. Oropeza lost to McCray 6-2, 6-4 in her No. 2 singles match and Hernandez lost to Fowler at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-0.

The Aztecs close out their California trip tomorrow when they play at Grossmont College in El Cajon, CA. The match begins at 2:00 p.m.
