Aztecs women's tennis shines in first day at Region I Tournament

The Pima Community College women's tennis team competed in the first day of the Region I Tournament on Tuesday at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.

All of the women's tennis players advanced to their respected championship rounds in singles competition. Noelle Karp (Catalina Foothills HS) defeated Mesa Community College's Rachel Eshillonu in a three-set match that went three-hours and 45 minutes. Karp won 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 at No. 1 singles and defeated Eshillonu for the first time this season.

Cristina Oropeza (Nogales HS) defeated Michelle Fornier from Mesa 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles while Yani Alameda (Pueblo HS) beat Cassidy McWhorter from Eastern Arizona College 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

In her No. 4 singles match, Ema Hernandez (Sunnyside HS) advanced after she beat Angie Morales from Glendale Community College 6-1, 6-2. Stephanie Nickles (Ironwood Ridge HS) won her No. 5 singles match over Taylor Delorme from Glendale 6-0, 6-1 while Jahnessa Mackey (Amphitheater HS) defeated Breanna Beus from Eastern Arizona 6-2, 6-2.

All three doubles teams will play in their respected semifinal rounds in tomorrow's competition as well. The matches begin tomorrow at 8:00 a.m.

First-Team:

Jahnessa Mackey (No. 6 singles) – undefeated in conference (8-0) singles matches

Cristina Oropeza (No. 2 singles) – 7-1 record in conference singles matches.

Second-Team:
