Aztecs women's tennis go undefeated in first day at NJCAA Nationals

The Pima Community College women's tennis team swept through its opponents on the first day of competition in the NJCAA National Tournament on Sunday at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center.

The Aztecs earned 18 points for the day (two for each win) and were first place in the team standings. Each singles and doubles team advance to Monday's round of 16.

Ema Hernandez (Sunnyside HS) fought back from being down 4-5 in the first set to defeat Taylor White from Meridian Community College (MS) 7-6, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Yani Alameda (Pueblo HS) rallied off three straight points in the first set to beat Hannah Mathis from Snead State Community College (AL) 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. In their No. 2 doubles match, Alameda and Hernandez held off a late surge in the second set to beat Alden Hartley and Summer Stockstill from Meridian CC 6-0, 7-5.

Cristina Oropeza (Nogales HS) won her No. 2 singles match against Kara Chitty from Jacksonville College (FL) 6-3, 6-0 while Noelle Karp (Catalina Foothills HS) won her match at No. 1 singles over Margaux Perez from Barton Community College (KS) after Perez had to retire because of an injury. Karp and Oropeza won a close match against Georgie Gosen and Amy Leiu from North Central Texas College 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles. The Aztecs duo had lost to them in a match earlier this season.

At No. 5 singles, Stephanie Nickles (Ironwood Ridge HS) rallied off five straight set points in the first set to beat Jessica VanOosten from Sauk Valley Community College (IL) 6-2, 6-1. Jahnessa Mackey (Amphitheater HS) won her No. 6 singles match over Becca Brining from Barton CC 6-0, 6-1. Nickles and Mackey rallied in the first set and won a close second set against Alex Dennis and Abby Mundel from Lewis & Clark Community College (IL) 7-5, 6-4.

The Aztecs will compete in their round of 16 matches tomorrow starting at 7:30 a.m. at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center.
