Aztecs Women's Tennis Earn Sweep to Open ACCAC Conference
The Pima Community College women's tennis team (3-1, 1-0 in ACCAC) opened ACCAC conference play on Thursday at the Tucson Racquet Club in dominating fashion.
The Aztecs earned a sweep in singles and doubles to beat Eastern Arizona College 9-0.
Freshman Kelsey Brown (Ironwood Ridge HS) fell behind 1-4 in the first set of her match at No. 1 singles. She rallied off 11 straight set points to beat Amelie Saint-Dizier 6-4, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, freshman Samantha Ruth (Catalina Foothills HS) fell behind 2-3 in the second set but came back to defeat Nikki Hill 6-3, 7-5.
Sophomore Stephanie Nickles (Ironwood Ridge HS) maintained a lead throughout her match at No. 3 singles to beat Sydney Williams 6-3, 6-2 while fellow sophomore Ema Hernandez (Sunnyside HS) beat Celine Marin 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Freshman Fernanda Miller (Nogales HS) shutout Erin Hackett in the first set and won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Freshman Dana Pineda (Rincon/University HS) beat Zoey Freeman at No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles competition, Brown and Ruth earned a shutout victory over Saint-Dizier and Marin 8-0 at No. 1 doubles while Nickles and Miller defeated Williams and Hackett 8-1 in the No. 2 doubles match. Hernandez and Pineda rallied off three straight set points to beat Hill and Freeman 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
The Aztecs will be back at the Tucson Racquet Club on Tuesday when they host an ACCAC conference match against Mesa Community College at 1:30 p.m.
