Aztecs Women's Tennis Rally in Singles Play to Beat Mesa College
The Pima Community College women's tennis team (4-2) rallied in singles competition on Tuesday as they played a non-conference match at San Diego Mesa College.
After dropping two of the three doubles, the No. 19 ranked Aztecs responded by taking five of the six singles matches to win 6-3.
Freshman Samantha Ruth (Catalina Foothills HS) came back after dropping the opening set at No. 2 singles as she defeated Grace Booth 1-6, 6-1, 10-6.
Sophomore Noelle Karp (Catalina Foothills HS) played at No. 3 singles and beat Lauren Smith 6-1, 6-1 while fellow sophomore Stephanie Nickles (Ironwood Ridge HS) beat Thalina Saetern 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
Sophomore Ema Hernandez (Sunnyside HS) earned a shutout in the first set of her No. 5 singles match and went on to defeat Iris Shea-Villafane 6-0, 6-3. Fernanda Miller (Nogales HS) shut out Stephanie Begle at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles competition, Pima's win came from Nickles and Miller as they won their No. 3 doubles match over Shea-Villafane and Begle 8-3.
Brown and Ruth lost the No. 1 doubles match to Garrido and Smith 8-1 while Karp and Hernandez dropped a close match to Booth and Saetern 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.
The Aztecs will close out their California trip at Grossmont College on Wednesday. The match begins at 1:00 p.m.
