Ruth Rallies to Win Singles Match as Women's Tennis Beat Grossmont College
The Pima Community College women's tennis team (5-2) completed its California trip on Wednesday as the Aztecs defeated Grossmont College 8-1.
Freshman Samantha Ruth (Catalina Foothills HS) won her second straight three-set match. She dropped the first set but rallied to win 6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 10-7 at No. 2 singles.
Freshman Kelsey Brown (Ironwood Ridge HS) won her match at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-4. Sophomore Stephanie Nickles (Ironwood Ridge HS) won at No. 3 singles over Amanda DiGiovanni 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Ema Hernandez (Sunnyside HS) beat Alexa Hughes 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles while freshman Fernanda Miller (Nogales HS) stymied Tila Whitaker at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-2. In the No. 6 singles match, freshman Dana Pineda (Rincon/University HS) fell to Alexia Mercer 6-1, 6-4.
In doubles competition, Brown and Ruth won their match 8-1 at No. 1 doubles. Hernandez and fellow sophomore Noelle Karp (Catalina Foothills HS) defeated DiGiovanni and Hughes 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. Nickles and Miller outplayed Oksanna West and Whitaker at No. 3 doubles, winning 8-2.
The Aztecs get back to ACCAC conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Glendale Community College. The match starts at 1:30 p.m.
