Hernandez and Pineda Win Three-Set Matches as Women's Tennis Beats Skagit Valley

The Pima Community College women's tennis team (8-3) capped off a busy week with a non-conference win on Saturday against Skagit Valley College (WA.)

The Aztecs defeated the Cardinals 8-1 at the Tucson Racquet Club. Pima won two matches by default. They also finished 3-1 for the week.

Sophomore Ema Hernandez (Sunnyside HS) rallied after dropping the first set in her No. 3 singles match. She defeated Suea Love 3-6, 6-1, 10-4. Freshman Dana Pineda (Rincon/University HS) was shutout in the second set of her No. 5 singles match but took the tie-breaker to win 6-4, 0-6, 11-9 against Brittany Denike.

In other singles competition, freshman Kelsey Brown (Ironwood Ridge HS) won a tight first set but responded in the second set. She beat Carlie Newman 7-6, 6-0. Sophomore Stephanie Nickles (Ironwood Ridge HS) defeated Eunica Chan 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 singles while freshman Fernanda Miller (Nogales HS) won her No. 3 singles match over Christina Barber 6-3, 6-0.

Brown and No. 1 doubles partner Samantha Ruth (Catalina Foothills HS) defeated Chan and Love 8-2. Sophomore Noelle Karp (Catalina Foothills HS) and Hernandez lost at No. 2 doubles against Newman and Denike 8-5.

The Aztecs will get back to ACCAC conference play as they travel to Thatcher, AZ on Tuesday to play at Eastern Arizona College. The match starts at 1:30 p.m.
