Aztecs Women's Tennis Get 10th Win of the Season, Beat Glendale
The Pima Community College women's tennis team secured its 10th win of the season (10-4, 5-2 in ACCAC) on Thursday as it defeated Glendale Community College (1-6, 1-5) at the Tucson Racquet Club. The No. 22 ranked Aztecs won 8-1.
The No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Stephanie Nickles (Ironwood Ridge HS) and freshman Fernanda Miller (Nogales HS) earned a shutout win over Lyssa Le and Karen Reyes 8-0. The duo improved to 9-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
Nickles won her No. 4 singles match as she blanked Ashley Smith in the first set and won the final three set points in the second to win 6-0, 6-3. Miller took control of the second set in her No. 6 singles win over Reyes 6-2, 6-0.
In the No. 1 doubles match, the duo of freshmen Kelsey Brown (Ironwood Ridge HS) and Samantha Ruth (Catalina Foothills HS) defeated Jordan Vlad and Theresa Jones 8-1. Brown dominated Vlad in their No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-1. Ruth rallied after dropping the first set against Jones to win 3-6, 6-1, 10-7 at No. 2 singles.
The No. 2 doubles duo of sophomores Noelle Karp (Catalina Foothills HS) and Ema Hernandez (Sunnyside HS) beat Natalia Mendenhall and Smith 8-1. Hernandez earned a shutout victory over Le 6-0, 6-0 in their No. 5 singles match.
Freshman Dana Pineda (Rincon/University HS) played at No. 3 singles but fell to Mendenhall 6-2, 6-1.
The Aztecs will host a non-conference match at the Tucson Racquet Club tomorrow against No. 10 ranked New Mexico Military Institute. The match begins at 11:30 a.m.
