Aztecs Women's Tennis Advance in Five Singles Matches at Region I Championships

The Pima Community College women's tennis team advanced five of their six singles players to the championship round after the first day of the Region I Championships at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, AZ.

The Aztecs finished the first day trailing Mesa Community College in the team standings by one point. The Thunderbirds sit at 15 points while the Aztecs have 14 points.

At No. 2 singles, Samantha Ruth (Catalina Foothills HS) played a three-and-a-half hour match and rallied to win 6-7, 6-4, 7-5. She trailed 1-3 in the third set.

Kelsey Brown (Ironwood Ridge HS) won her match at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0. Stephanie Nickles won her No. 4 singles match 6-1, 6-0 while Ema Hernandez (Sunnyside HS) won at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-1. Fernanda Miller advanced after she won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

Doubles competition begins tomorrow with the semifinals round.

Play continues tomorrow at the Paseo Racquet Center starting at 8:00 a.m.
