Brown and Hernandez Play Tough Three Set Matches in Second Day at NJCAA Tournament

The Pima Community College women's tennis team faced tough competition in the round of 16 on Monday at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament.

The Aztecs didn't accumulate any points and dropped to 15th place with 10 points.

Freshman Kelsey Brown (Ironwood Ridge HS) won the first set against Amanda Alvarez-Bargueno from North Central Texas College, but fell in the end 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.

Sophomore Ema Hernandez (Sunnyside HS) won the first set in her No. 5 singles match but dropped a tie-breaking second set and lost to Jordyn Hull from Meridian Community College (MS) 2-6, 7-6, 6-2.

Freshman Samantha Ruth (Catalina Foothills HS) dropped her No. 2 singles match against No. 3 seeded Elizabeth Bagerbaseh from Tyler Junior College 6-0, 6-2. Fellow freshman Fernanda Miller (Nogales HS) lost her No. 6 singles match against No. 2 seeded Maria Garduno from Mesa Community College 6-0, 6-0.

Sophomore Stephanie Nickles (Ironwood Ridge HS) fell in her No. 4 singles match against Yennifer Delgado from Seward County Community College (KS) 6-3, 6-1. Nickles will play Sydney Williams from Eastern Arizona College in the consolation bracket quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Sophomore Noelle Karp (Catalina Foothills HS) earned a bye to the consolation bracket quarterfinals. She will play Celine Marin from Eastern Arizona College on Tuesday.

All three Pima doubles teams also fell in the round of 16. Brown and Ruth fell 6-0, 6-1 to Maria Elena Medina Betancourt and Julia Sergheeva from the State College of Florida in the No. 1 doubles match.

Hernandez and Karp dropped their No. 2 doubles match to No. 5 seeded Anita Detlava and Mariya Yatsenko from St. Petersburg College (FL) 6-1, 6-0.

Nickles and Miller lost to Amiena Houston and Maria Zubkova from the State College of Florida 6-0, 6-2. The No. 3 doubles duo will play in the consolation bracket quarterfinals against No. 6 seeded Morgan Trask and Taylor Whitehead from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (GA).
