Shafer wins close matches to help women's tennis beat Paradise Valley CC
The Pima Community College women's tennis team (3-2, 2-2 in ACCAC) earned a conference road victory on Thursday in Phoenix.
The Aztecs defeated Paradise Valley Community College 7-2.
Freshman Jayme Shafer (Tucson HS) won a pair of close matches on the day. She played a tight singles match in the second set but came away with the win at No. 5 singles after she defeated Cheyanna Anderson 6-1, 7-5. Shafer, along with No. 3 doubles partner Elise Rodriguez (Flowing Wells HS), beat Anderson and Ali Ambriz 8-5.
In other singles matches, No. 1 player Emma Oropeza (Nogales HS) upended Alexandra Levendi 6-1, 6-0 while Janine Fernando (Sabino HS) won her No. 2 singles match over Chanel Ruiz 6-0, 6-1. Lien Nguyen beat Bianca Amaya 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Sophomore Dana Pineda (University HS) dropped her match at No. 4 singles to Erica Wolford 6-0, 6-4 and Rodriguez fell to Ambriz at No. 6 singles 6-3, 7-5.
The Aztecs swept the other matches in doubles. Oropeza and Fernando defeated Ruiz and Amaya at No. 1 doubles 8-3 while Nguyen and sophomore Ashley Ochoa (Tucson HS) won a close match-up at No. 2 doubles over Levendi and Wolford 8-6.
The Aztecs will begin the second half of the season on Tuesday when they host Eastern Arizona College at the West Campus Tennis Courts. The match will start at 1:30 p.m.
