Ochoa wins three-set match as women's tennis beats Glendale

The Pima Community College women's tennis team (4-4, 3-4 in ACCAC) earned a win on the road on Thursday.

The Aztecs defeated Glendale Community College 7-2 in their final road match of the regular season.

Sophomore Ashley Ochoa (Tucson HS) recovered after dropping the first set and dominated the tie-breaker against Sunniva Juliussen 5-7, 7-5, 10-2 at No. 4 singles.

Freshman Janine Fernando (Sabino HS) defeated Giselle Mercado at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1 while freshman Lien Nguyen beat Angela Morales at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-1.

Freshman Jayme Shafer (Tucson HS) earned a shutout victory at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0 and fellow freshman Elise Rodriguez (Flowing Wells HS) earned a win in her No. 6 singles match over Yulma Lopez 6-0, 6-2.

Freshman Emma Oropeza (Nogales HS) played a tough match but fell at No. 1 singles against Julia Hansen 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles competition, the Aztecs took two out of three. Oropeza and Fernando dominated and beat Mercado and Morales 8-1 while Shafer and Rodriguez played a strong match to beat Ortega and Lopez 8-1.

Nguyen and sophomore Dana Pineda (University HS) lost at No. 2 doubles to Hansen and Juliussen 8-3.

The Aztecs close out the regular season on Tuesday at the West Campus Tennis Courts. They will host Paradise Valley Community College at 1:30 p.m.
