Nguyen advances to consolation finals at NJCAA National Tournament
The Pima Community College women's tennis team wrapped up the third day of competition at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament on Tuesday.
Freshman Lien Nguyen earned two wins in the No. 3 singles consolation bracket. She trailed 1-4 and at 5-6 before winning the final three points to beat Kyra Holway from Meridian Community College (MS) 8-6 in the quarterfinals. She went on to shut out Madison Ahlberg from Waubansee Community College (IL) 8-0 in the semifinals.
Nguyen will play No. 5 seeded Oriane Yehouenou from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (GA) on Wednesday at 8:00 a.m.
Freshman Elise Rodriguez (Flowing Wells HS) fell in the No. 6 singles consolation quarterfinals to Kelsea Baksh from North Central Texas 8-1.
The Aztecs dropped all three doubles matches in the consolation quarterfinals. The No. 3 doubles team of Nguyen and freshman Ashley Ochoa (Tucson HS) surrendered the final five points of the match to Waubansee's Ahlberg and Courtney Decker as they lost 9-7.
Freshmen Emma Oropeza (Nogales HS) and Janine Fernando (Sabino HS) fell to Brittany Bennett and Alexandria Gilbert from Collin College (TX) 8-2. Rodriguez and freshmen Jayme Shafer (Tucson HS) fell at No. 3 doubles to Emily Cheshier and Abby Hayes from Central Alabama 8-1.
Nguyen will be the sole Pima player to play in Wednesday's competition.
