Harrison homers twice as Baseball sweeps Chandler-Gilbert

The Pima Community College baseball team (9-7, 7-5) earned its second straight ACCAC conference sweep on Tuesday as the Aztecs beat visiting Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

Roy Aguirre (Douglas HS) and Chris Kucko (Sahuarita HS) earned wins on the mound and left fielder Devin Harrison (Ironwood Ridge HS) cracked two home runs in the second game.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 2, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 1 (7 innings)

Aguirre pitched a gem in the first game and earned his first win as a starting pitcher in Pima's 2-1 victory in the first game. Aguirre (4-0) pitched a complete-game giving up one run (one earned) on four hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks on 102 pitches.

Down 1-0 in the 4th inning, Trevor Johnson hit a leadoff double and scored on Ivan Estrella's (Tucson Magnet HS) RBI single. Estrella scored on a passed ball to put the Aztecs up for good. Johnson went 2 for 3 with a run scored while Estrella finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 5, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 4 (9 innings)

Kucko pitched five hitless innings while relievers Vinnie Tarantola (Sahuaro HS) and Daniel Tolano (Cholla HS) halted a rally as the Aztecs won the second game 5-4. Kucko (1-3) pitched six innings giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Tarantola went two and two-third innings giving up one run (one earned) on two hits with three walks and Tolano earned the save as he finished the game in the 9th.

The Aztecs' offense struck in the 3rd inning as Harrison led off the inning with a solo home run to put the Aztecs up 1-0. Estrella hit an RBI single to score Brandon Burke (Canyon del Oro HS) and later Daniel Peters (Sabino HS) hit an RBI single to plate Estrella to make it 4-0. Harrison hit another solo shot in the 4th inning to make it 5-0. Chandler-Gilbert scored two in the 6th, one run in the 7th and one in the 9th inning. Harrison finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Estrella was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Burke went 3 for 4 with a run scored and a double.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Saturday when they host a conference doubleheader against Glendale Community College. The games will be at noon and 2:30 p.m.
