Aztecs baseball gets swept at Arizona Western College

The Pima Community College baseball team (21-20, 14-16 in ACCAC) dropped a pair of tough games on Saturday at Arizona Western College in Yuma. The Aztecs have lost six straight.

Ruben Bracamontes (Sunnyside HS) was a bright spot for the Aztecs on offense as he went 2 for 6 on the day with a triple and a home run.

Game 1: Arizona Western College Matadors 1, Pima CC Aztecs 0 (7 innings):

The Aztecs' offense had three hits and left six runners on base in their 1-0 loss in the first game. With two outs in the 7th, Bracamontes hit a triple but Jaquese Moore struck out to end the game. Bracamontes was 1 for 3 while Al Cruz (Nogales HS) finished 2 for 2. Ivan Estrella (Tucson Magnet HS) drew two walks while Devin Harrison (Ironwood Ridge HS) and Trey Stine (Ironwood Ridge HS) each drew one walk. Arizona Western scored the only run of the game in the 2nd inning.

Justin Hammergren (Sahuaro HS) threw four innings giving up one run (one earned) on two hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Roy Aguirre (Douglas HS) pitched two innings giving up two hits with one strikeout.

Game 2: Arizona Western College Matadors 9, Pima CC Aztecs 8 (9 innings):

The Aztecs scored six runs in the 3rd but Arizona Western rallied in the late innings to beat Pima 9-8. In the 3rd inning, Harrison started things off with a solo home run to put the Aztecs up 3-2. Later, Trevor Johnson hit a two-run RBI single which was followed by Bracamontes' three-run home run to put the Aztecs up 8-2. Arizona Western scored four runs in the 7th, two in the 8th and one in the 9th to win it.

Bracamontes was 1 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Harrison finished 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Johnson was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and Stine went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Johnson took the loss (1-1). Chris Kucko started and pitched six and one-third innings giving up five runs (five earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and six walks.

The Aztecs will look to get back on track next Saturday as they play a conference doubleheader at Mesa Community College. Games are at noon and 2:30 p.m.
