Tolano Throws No-Hitter as Aztecs Baseball Dominates Utah State-Eastern

The Pima Community College baseball team (2-0) opened the 2016 season with two dominating wins on Friday at the West Campus.

The Aztecs outscored Utah State University-Eastern 25-2 in the two games and pitchers Daniel Tolano (Cholla HS) and Ernesto Romero (Salpointe Catholic HS) combined for 15 strikeouts. Sophomore Al Cruz (Nogales HS) went 2 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 13, Utah State-Eastern Golden Eagles 0 (5 innings)

In the first game, Tolano (1-0), a sophomore, dominated as he threw five hitless innings in Pima's 13-0 win. He finished with eight strikeouts and two walks on 65 pitches.

The offense did the rest as the Aztecs scored five runs in the 1st inning, two runs in the 2nd and capped it off with six in the 3rd.  Freshman Manny Ramirez (Bisbee HS) went 2 for 3 with three runs scored and two RBIs while sophomore Jacob Northrup (Sahuaro HS) was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Cruz finished 1 for 1 with three runs scored and two RBIs. He had a two-run RBI double in the third inning.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 12, Utah State-Eastern Golden Eagles 2 (7 innings)

The Aztecs scored six runs in the 1st inning as sophomore Ryan Ramsower (Salpointe Catholic HS) and freshman Oscar Larranaga (Sunnyside HS) each had RBI triples in the inning. Freshman Hunter Green (Sahuaro HS) had an RBI single and Cruz contributed with an RBI double as part of a four-run 5th inning. Ramsower fell a home run short of hitting for the cycle as he finished 4 for 5 with two RBIs. Larranaga went 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Cruz was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

Romero (1-0), a freshman, pitched all seven innings giving up two runs (two earned) on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

The Aztecs will play another doubleheader against Utah State University-Eastern tomorrow at the West Campus. The games are at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
