Northrup and Catalano Lead the Way as Baseball Earns Sweep at Chandler-Gilbert

The Pima Community College baseball team (15-6, 6-6 in ACCAC) earned its first ACCAC conference sweep of the season at Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Tuesday.

Sophomores Jacob Northrup (Sahuaro HS) and Marcus Catalano (Salpointe Catholic HS) had big hits on the day. Freshman pitchers Trevelle Hill (Tucson Magnet HS) and Andres Hackman (Empire HS) picked up the wins.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 7, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 4 (7 innings)

The Aztecs produced four runs in the third inning as Felix hit a leadoff solo home run to tie it at 2-2. Sophomore Ryan Ramsower (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit a triple and scored on a throwing error. Later in the inning, Northrup hit a two-run RBI double to score Catalano and sophomore Francisco Rodriguez (Tucson Magnet HS) to make it 5-2.

In the fourth inning, Felix had a sacrifice-fly RBI to score sophomore Ivan Estrella (Tucson Magnet HS), who led off the inning with a triple. Freshman Manny Ramirez (Bisbee HS) hit a leadoff solo home run in the fifth inning to make it 7-2.

Felix finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Northrup went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Ramsower was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Rodriguez finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Hill picked up the win and improved to 3-2 on the year. He threw six innings giving up three runs (three earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore Daniel Tolano (Cholla HS) picked up the save as he pitched one inning giving up one run (one earned) on three hits.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 10, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 7 (9 innings)

The Aztecs took the lead in the third inning with four runs. Ramirez and freshman Myles Moran hit RBI singles in the inning as Pima led 4-0. Up 5-2 in the sixth inning, Catalano hit a two-run RBI single to plate Estrella and Felix.

Estrella finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Felix also went 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Catalano was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Ramirez was 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and two walks.

Hackman improved to 5-0 on the season after he pitched five innings giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Miguel Figueroa (Tucson Magnet HS) earned his third save of the season as he pitched the final one and two-third innings giving up one run (one earned) on two hits with one strikeout.

The Aztecs will be back on the road on Saturday when they play at Glendale Community College in an ACCAC doubleheader. The games will be at noon and 2:30 p.m.
